Our first Session presented our learners with the task of creating a tribe:
- Getting to know each other,
- Learning to support each other,
- Building friendships that will help them through the challenging academic and social moments ahead.
Learners discussed topics such as what is a growth mindset, what is excellence, how to give feedback, 3 monsters, and the Hero’s Journey during our 6 weeks.
Collaboration stations challenged learners to work together and actively apply their math or reading knowledge to real world tasks, covering topics like: graphing, logic puzzles, grammar, skip counting, odds/evens, riddles, building stem projects.
Art covered the artists Yayoi Kusama (live art installation in our studio with learners putting dots on our walls and a mushroom art piece), Marc Chagall (stained glass), and Shirley Purdie (Aboriginal art with dots and story telling).
SMART goals were explored, with learners setting academic goals on Monday to achieve by Friday (and if they did, they got to participate in FUN FRIDAY which included activities like ooblek, lego creation, gears and building).
The biggest take away from our first session was that our learners are capable of so much!
They have such big hearts and ideas – we can’t wait to see what our next session holds.
Next Session: Athens Quest!
